Hello, we’re Celia (writer) and Sage (publisher/Sweet Candy Press). We want to tell you about Celia’s zine anthology, Ofrenda. It is set to be released in October 2014 by Sweet Candy Press.
Celia C. Pérez was born in Judy Blume’s hometown to a father from Guantanamo, Cuba and a mother from San Juan del Rio, Durango, Mexico. She grew up in Miami, Florida. When she was fourteen, she was certain her future was in professional wrestling. Instead, she grew up to be a librarian and a writer. She still makes zines, is working on a middle grade novel and writes about Latinos in children’s and YA books at all-brown-all-around.blogspot.com. While she has listened to many versions of “La Bamba,” her favorite is still the one by Los Lobos. She lives in Chicago with a couple of tall dudes.
Sweet Candy Press is run by Sage Adderley in Olympia,Washington. Sage has been running Sweet Candy Distro for over ten years, and Ofrenda: A Zine Anthology will be Sweet Candy’s fifth title. Sage is no stranger to the hard work and determination it takes to pull off this exciting venture.
Other Sweet Candy titles:
Heavy Hangs the Head by Taryn Hipp
Everybody Else’s Girl by Sarah Sawyers-Lovett
Invoking Nonna by Sage Adderley
The Greatest Most Traveling Circus! by Jonas
Sweet Candy Press uses a local family-owned printing company that has been going strong for thirty-seven years.
I’m really drawn to the idea of unconventional memoirs and autobiographies. I’m also obsessed with documenting which is probably the reason I’ve continued making zines all these years. The Ofrenda anthology is twenty years of life as told through my zines. This is my own unconventional memoir. This is me from stubborn and naive young adult to stubborn and jaded middle aged adult.
The best part about working on this project is that when I gathered up and looked at twenty years of writing, I felt that I could finally put into words the things and the qualities that deeply influence me. These are the things that are always there, if not on the surface then not too far below. This is what I look for in stories, in people, in the world, in life and what I hope to convey in my own writing: humor, wonder, simplicity, magic, history, a sense of connection however small.
I like to think of Ofrenda as a big colorful piñata. There’s something in here from almost all of my zines. Break it open and discover all the little treasures that fall out, all these little pieces of a life.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for supporting this project. I hope you enjoy it. Here’s to another twenty years of glue sticks and being totally baffled by page layout.
